To ensure a banking account in every household the Prime Minister on assuming office in the maiden speech from the Red Fort on August 15 2014 announced the need for concerted efforts. Pradhan Mantri Jan DhanYojana (PMJDY) which envisages universal access to banking facilities with at least one basic banking account for every household consolidates governments effort to increase number of households availing banking services. As of December 06 2017 a total of 30.7 crore accounts had been opened under the scheme of which 18.1 crore are in rural areas and 12.7 crore in urban areas. The number of RuPay cards have also increased to 23.1 crore.
